Chofu(長府), the historical castle town in Shimonoseki, is an ideal place to fully savor the essence of autumn in Japan. Here, we introduce four famous spots for viewing the stunning autumn hues:
Chofu Garden: A vast Japanese garden spanning approximately 31,000 square meters where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll while admiring the autumn hues. The bridge over the pond is a hidden gem perfect for Instagram-worthy photos.
Chofu Mori Residence: This over 100-year-old samurai-style residence offers a beautiful Japanese garden with vibrant autumn hues. You can even experience traditional matcha tea while enjoying the view.
Kozanji Temple: Each maple tree here is impressively large and stunning. The contrast between the grand main gate and the National Treasure Buddha Hall profoundly evokes the feeling of autumn.
Kakuenji Temple: A little-known treasure located slightly away from the center of Chofu Castle Town. The sight of nearly 100 maple trees turning the entire area a brilliant red hue is truly breathtaking.
Though slightly away from Chofu, Togyoan Hermitage is also highly recommended. The serene environment and beautiful foliage make it a perfect spot to appreciate the autumn hues.
Additionally, in late November each year, there is an event called “Irodori no Chofu Castle Town,” during which the beautiful town of Chofu, adorned in deep autumn hues, is illuminated as part of the “Candle Night” event. If your visit coincides with this event, you might have the chance to witness this magical scene.
For an unforgettable autumn trip, we highly recommend visiting Shimonoseki’s Castle Town, Chofu!
