Imo Shochu, whose production method has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a spirit made from sweet potatoes. Kagoshima is home to over 100 shochu distilleries, the most in Japan, offering a variety of brands with different flavors and aromas. In recent years, fruit-flavored shochu such as lychee and banana have been gaining attention. In Tenmonkan, the largest entertainment district in Southern Kyushu, there are many shochu bars where you can enjoy a variety of shochu, as well as restaurants offering local dishes (such as Kuroge Wagyu beef and Kurobuta pork) that pair perfectly with shochu.
