Genpei Night in Akama Shrine: History Staged Where the Taira Clan Went Under

On five Saturdays in October 2026 – the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st – Shimonoseki stages Genpei Night in Akama Shrine. The performance takes place on the lit steps before the main hall, in a shrine that stands directly above the Kanmon Strait, and the Genpei War it stages happened in the water below.

Why This Place, This Story

The performance itself compresses centuries into one staging: from Yoshitsune's legendary leap between eight boats during the battle, through to the Kiheitai militia of the 1860s, whose actions in this same domain helped bring down the shogunate. It is an unusual proposition – a historical drama performed outdoors, on the ground where the history happened, on autumn nights when the air off the strait has turned cool.

What You Are Watching

The staging uses the shrine itself rather than a built set. Performers enter through the vermilion gate and work on the stone steps in front of the main hall, with the shrine's own architecture as the backdrop and the audience seated below looking up. Lighting does the rest. It is closer to site-specific outdoor theatre than to a festival performance, and the scale is intimate – you are close enough to see faces.

The performance is in Japanese. Whether that matters depends on what you came for. The Genpei War is the founding narrative of samurai Japan and its outline is widely known outside the country; the setting, the costumes and the staging carry a great deal without dialogue. But it is fair to say this is watched rather than followed, unless you read Japanese. The city has confirmed there are no subtitles, no English synopsis handed out on the night and no multilingual page – so read the outline below before you go, and you will know which scene you are in.

The Shrine On Any Other Day

Akama Shrine is worth the stop outside the five Saturdays. Beyond the main hall lie the graves of the Taira, and a hall associated with Hoichi – the blind lute player of the ghost story, who was said to have been summoned by the Taira dead to perform for them and who survived only because his body was written over with sutras. The story is fiction; the reason it attaches to this shrine is not. A place where an emperor drowned at six accumulates that kind of narrative.

The gate is also one of the better things to photograph in Shimonoseki. Vermilion against the grey of the strait, with Kyushu visible on the far side, and container ships passing through the frame at intervals. It photographs well by day and better at dusk.

How To Attend

Doors open at 19:00 and the performance runs from 20:00 to 21:00. There is no admission fee. A donation toward the running costs of the Sentei Festival is collected on the night; giving is entirely optional and there is no set amount. No booking is required. The performance is cancelled even in light rain – it is staged outdoors on stone steps, and Japanese festivals usually go ahead in a drizzle, so this is worth knowing. If the forecast is wet, have a second plan for the evening.

Getting There

Shin-Shimonoseki is a Sanyo Shinkansen stop, under an hour from Hakata (Fukuoka) and about 90 minutes from Hiroshima. Akama Shrine sits on the strait road between central Shimonoseki and the Chofu castle town, close to the Kanmon pedestrian tunnel that lets you walk under the water to Kyushu. Combining the shrine, the tunnel and a fugu dinner makes a single, very local evening.

October also falls inside the city's autumn lodging campaign, which discounts rooms and issues coupons for local shops. If you are coming for one of the five Saturdays, the overnight is cheaper than it looks.
