Centered around Kumamoto Castle, one of the Three Great Castles of Japan, the city retains the castle town culture to this day. In the Shinmachi/Furumachi area, located between Kumamoto Castle and Kumamoto Station, many long-established stores with over 200 years of history are still in business today. Many people visit Suizen-ji Joju-en Garden, a famous garden in the city, to enjoy the beauty of Japanese gardens.

Visitors can also try their hand at making pottery and leather crafts, and there is also a store where crafts are available for purchase.
This area re-creates the bustling atmosphere of a seventeenth-century castle town, and is a great place to experience the food, culture, and history of Kumamoto.
Even though Lake Ezu is bounded on two sides by the busy Densha-Dori and the even busier Route 57, the area around the lake is subdued and relaxing, making it a popular place for a quiet jog or an afternoon picnic. Lake Ezu is also an excellent place to cool down during Kumamoto's sweltering summer months.
