WHAT MAKES IT WORTH SEEING
Takeo's pottery tradition, Takeo-yaki, carries some 400 years of history, and each kiln brings its own style and character. Every autumn, as the leaves turn, the city's kilns open their doors for this yearly kiln-opening season — a chance to find a piece that stays with you.
Enjoy the autumn colors at beautiful Japanese gardens and famous foliage spots, and at the potters' “kiln openings” (kamabiraki), discover limited-edition pieces and hidden finds while chatting with the makers themselves.
Takeo City Library and Historical Museum, the Saga Prefectural Space and Science Museum, and Yoko Museum & Keishuen are all holding autumn special exhibitions as well — well worth a stop.
THE SEASON, AND THE EVENING
Kiln openings run one after another from October 24 (Sat) through November 27 (Fri), 2026 (exact dates vary by kiln), with peak autumn color arriving from early November. Round it out with the season's local flavors, then, after a day of foliage, culture and food, soothe away the day's fatigue at Takeo Onsen, a hot spring with some 1,300 years of history.
HOW TO VISIT
The festival isn't a single fenced site — it's spread across Takeo City, from the kilns and gardens to the museums holding autumn exhibitions, so plan to move between a few spots over the day. From Hakata, Takeo-Onsen Station is about an hour away by the Relay Kamome limited express — which continues on to Nagasaki via the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen — or by the direct Midori or Huis Ten Bosch limited expresses.
