From August 1 to October 12, 2026, Takeo lights its landmarks after sunset. This is not a single event on a single night: across the season, the shrine, the library, the Takeo Onsen Romon Gate and the station plaza each carry their own light installation, and an evening here can be paired with Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel's standing indoor exhibition by the internationally known art collective teamLab, on permanent display year-round. The result is a small Saga town that looks nothing after dark like it does at noon.
WHAT MAKES IT WORTH SEEING
Takeo's appeal is that the venues were already worth visiting. At Takeo Shrine, a nighttime visit leads under paper umbrellas and lantern light toward a golden-lit main hall; the shrine's ancient camphor tree is deliberately left unlit as a protection measure, though the path leading to it is illuminated, and the shrine adds a soap-bubble performance on the evenings of September 20 and October 3. Keishuen, a 3,000-tsubo Japanese garden attached to the Yoko Museum, lights its waterfall and summer maples for nine nights only, September 19-27. And Takeo City Library and Kids' Library, redesigned in 2013 and one of the most photographed public buildings in Japan, strings its grounds with some 50,000 lights every evening through the season.
Rather than one theme running across every site, each venue does its own thing. The Takeo Onsen Romon Gate, a designated Important Cultural Property by the Japanese Government, changes the color of its usual nightly lighting on summer weekends and holidays; the station's south plaza runs a lit fountain and zodiac-figure illumination year-round; and Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel keeps a standing, ticketed indoor exhibition by teamLab – "Ruins and Remains: Rinkan Chanoyu" – open in its lobby and former bathhouse hall every day of the year but two in September. It is a separate, paid visit rather than part of the outdoor lighting, but an easy one to combine with an evening in town.
The spread of schedules is a practical consequence worth planning around: from a single Saturday planetarium show to a year-round exhibit, no two nights in Takeo line up the same way, so it is worth checking which venues are actually running before setting out. It also means you are unlikely to be shoulder-to-shoulder with a crowd chasing one peak night, the way you might for a single fireworks display.
HOW TO VISIT
Dates, hours and admission differ by venue – most sites are free to enter, though Keishuen (¥800), the planetarium show, and the teamLab exhibition at Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel (from ¥400) charge admission. The sites are spread across town rather than concentrated in one park, so allow time to move between them. Parking is free at most venues; only parking at the station's south and north exits is paid.

GETTING THERE
Takeo-Onsen is a stop on the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, which puts it directly between Hakata and Nagasaki – roughly an hour from Fukuoka and half an hour from Nagasaki, making it one of the easiest overnight stops on a western Kyushu route. The hot springs themselves date back some 1,300 years and the Takeo Onsen Romon Gate is a designated Important Cultural Property by the Japanese Government, so the natural close to an evening of walking between lit gardens is the water.
